PERSONAL JOURNAL OF

HENRY CLAY GORTON

September 23, 2000 The last entry in my journal was made 3 Jan. 1999. I had become so busy writing the “Ask Gramps” and the Melchizedec priesthood lessons column for www.mormontown.com that I simply did not have time to make journal entries. I usually spent each day until about 9:00 PM working at the computer. At 9 o’clock I would watch TV for a couple of hours and then relax at the piano for another couple of hours before getting to bed around 1 AM.

Why the piano. With the money I received from the sale of the Starduster I bought a Kawai Concert Performer. The sound quality and versatility of the piano system is so tremendous that I never tire playing it.

The reason for this return to the journal is to report an activity of today. Don Mortensen is the assistant to the president of the Salt Lake Temple, and I had him arrange a tour of the temple for a few members from our Ward. Don had the assistant chief engineer take us through the temple. We visited up on the sixth and seventh floors, under the spires at the east end, and saw and heard many wonderful things about the temple. As part of the tour, we visited the solemn assembly room on the fifth floor. In that room, near the tiers of pulpits on the east end, is a Steinway Grand Piano donated to the Church by a wealthy member. We were told that it’s value was between $150,000 and $200,000! So, one of the group suggested that I play a hymn on it. The engineer did not object, and furnished me with a hymn book. So I played “Nearer My God To Thee” on that marvelous piano in the solemn assembly room of the Salt Lake Temple!

I have recently terminated my Ask Gramps column and declined to write the Priesthood lessons for next year for the web site. Both tasks have been rewarding experiences, so I will record below some of the comments that correspondents made with respect to the columns.

The Priesthood Lessons—

Dear Gramps,

I surfed into your site from the link at Mormontown. Since I teach the Elder’s Quorum, I looked up your lessons there. What a great resource. Sometimes it is hard for me to come up with ways to make some of this stuff interesting. We have a small Quorum, (I think the High Priests out number us by about 2 to one!)  In any case, sometimes these lessons can be a bit dry, (Sorry Bro. Brigham!) so it is sometimes a challenge to keep it interesting. After looking over your “lesson plan” it gave me a few fresh ideas to use. I also checked out your website. What a great site! I think the best part is the “Ask Gramps” section! I enjoyed your answers to the questions. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family!

I am a member of the Skyline Ward, Tacoma WA Stake.

Mike Pittman

I wanted to thank you for the great lesson materials for the Priesthood lessons. I teach these topics to a quorum of High Priests, talk about a tough crowd, they certainly been around enough to keep me on my toes. The lesson material will certainly help. Thanks again,

Best Wishes

Terry

You are a gold mine! The lessons you post for Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society, and Priesthood are a valuable addition to our resources. When will R.S. lesson #33 be posted?? My wife is anxiously awaiting it.

Kia Ora from New Zealand.

I am grateful for your Priesthood contributions.

Thanks and good wishes,

Douglas J.Martin

I was baptized in the church a few years ago and have fallen short from attending church as I know I should. But I do stop the Elders whenever I see them riding around town on their bikes and gives them a few bucks to buy a good dinner. The main reason for this e-mail is to tell you I made a copy of the Priesthood Lesson on Chapter 35, and will keep my scripture reading as current as possible. I also what to thank the 1st Ward for the cyber site so I can stay in touch with the church.

God Bless,

Gregory

I have found that the lessons are a great help in my church studies each week .

Sincerely

PWO

I have very much enjoyed reading your lessons. Thank you for taking the time to post them on the web. I wish I had found them earlier so that I would not of  had to go back and play catch up, so to speak.

Glen

I enjoy your work. Joseph was my great great grandfather and it touches me deeply when I get a chance to read articles about him and the works he accomplished.

Kim Smith

I teach Priesthood, Sunday School, am the High Priest Group Leader, have a stake calling and am in charge of the Family History Computer at the Branch. It almost goes without saying that I would be lost without the help y’all have rendered this year. I truly appreciate having the assistance. God bless you for your efforts and your willingness to share your material with others who are stretched just a bit. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all at Mormontown.

May I take a moment to appreciate your priesthood lessons in Mormontown? As 1st Counselor for Ed in RS (and having the nickname in our ward as ‘the  sponge’)... wish that I could retain as much as I have the good fortune of exposing myself to... Your lessons are beautiful... clear... inspiring... and so honoring of the persons and the principles. I will miss the Brigham Young studies officially, but there is enough in that one small paperback to keep me digging for years to come. Thanks for all you do.

Jenn

Dear Brother Gorton,

Thank you so very much for the time you spend and efforts in preparing the Joseph F. Smith priesthood lessons. I found the Mormontown website about 4 months ago and I have been using your lessons in combination with the Relief Society Lessons on the 3rd Sunday ever since. You have a wonderful way of presenting the gospel principles and I, myself, have learned a lot from reading your materials. I appreciate your dedication to these lessons and look forward to the monthly information I receive to help me in preparing my lesson. THANK YOU!!!!

Sincerely,

Debbie Rogers, Paul, Idaho

I really appreciate the insight of the priesthood lessons. I would really appreciate it if Br. Gorton could also do the lessons for the Teachings for Our Times Lessons for priesthood. Those lessons come on the single page flyer from the brethren and have usually very little explanation, usually a reference to a conference talk. If Br. Gorton could start supplementing his standard Joseph F. Smith lessons with the Teachings for our times lessons it would really help.  Thanks

Greg Beck

Dear Bro. Gorton:

I am the 1st. Counselor in the EQ in my ward, I also have served as its teacher for the past year and a half. I cannot begin to tell you what a valuable asset your Mormontown Priesthood Lessons have been to me and the class. Every week, I go online and print your lesson for use with mine.  Without fail, you provide me with a greater knowledge, insight and love for the teachings of our prophets. Your lesson helps me in my preparation by enlarging my knowledge of the Gospel and finding different and additional talking points for the class. Thank you again for your dedication in preparing your lessons.

Yours

Mike Triggs

Thanks Brother Gorton for your contribution to these lessons. I frequently turn to you for supplemental info for my lessons to my Bountiful North Canyon 4th Ward HP Group.

David C. Racker

Thank you for the time you spent preparing this lesson for the internet. I have never used this site before. It was just what I needed to finish my preparations. You do an excellent job. My husband said, when I told him about your help “Does he get paid to do that, that would take a lot of time.”  I assume you do not. But even if you do I wanted to be sure to thank you. Sincerely,

Shirley Calder, Rexburg, Idaho.

Dear Brother Gorton,

Thank you for your wonderful lessons. I enjoy teaching Relief Society and have come to love these lessons. I appreciate your humble insights. Last Sunday (the lesson was on the scriptures) I used your thoughts about the Book of Mormon. I turned it into a visual aid. I held up a large college accounting book (1300 pages) and explained how anyone could learn all that was in this book and then some and so on. Then I held up a thin Book of Mormon (you know the rest). It was very effective and I received a further testimony of the Book of Mormon. Thank you for your wonderful lessons.

themccombs@access1.net

I appreciate the time you spend with your wonderful lessons. I find them very helpful in preparing my own lessons. Thank you so much for your insight and love of the Gospel.

Christine

I have just prepared and taught lesson eight, “The Holy Ghost”. I found it to both instructive and inspiring. Particularly, gaining an understanding how Peter could have denied the knowing of the Saviour and the apostles losing heart following the Saviour’s death.

Anthony, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Thank you for your lessons as they help me a lot in preparing the lessons. I am from Australia, the Summer Hill Ward of the Hyde Park Stake. I work for the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. at Randwick. My e‑mail address is bdabron@asnsw.health.nsw.gov.au

Dear Brother and Sister Gorton,

I want to thank you so much for putting your thoughts online to help in my preparation for teaching today’s lesson. (number 5) As I was going over your notes I was amazed at how my own thoughts were in the same line as yours. Thanks again for your help.

Chris Briggs, Stake Clerk, Newburgh NY Stake

Dear Brother Gorton,

I want you to know that I appreciate what you are doing to help instructors like me give better lessons. You are providing a great service at a great sacrifice of your time. May the Lord continue to bless you in your work. Sincerely,

George M. Knapp, Camarillo Second Ward, Camarillo California Stake

My name is Rennie Devison, one of the Leaders for the priesthood in our quorum. I really appreciate the effort you have put into discussing the priesthood lessons over the web. Many of the brethren including myself find it difficult the read the lesson material regularly. This I have pointed out can be fixed by us as individuals by making it a priority in our lives instead of football etc. I am personally looking forward reviewing all the lessons again from the beginning. It is more enjoyable to share doctrine, thoughts, feeling and testimony with others. Sharing and learning from someone with your experience will aid me in staying doctrinally sound. Regards,

Rennie Devison, Sydney, Australia

Bro. Gorton:

My 14 year old son and I just read your lesson. There is but one statement in it that bothered us. It stated that, "Science is essentially atheistic in nature." It is our belief that science  and

scientists are basically God based. How could you ever observe nature without recognizing the existence of the creator? True science requires a belief in God and you have castigated science in general as being atheistic. Thanks for your efforts. If you e‑mail us, use airdude6@aol.com instead of Juno.

Rick and Derek Cox

Dear Rick and Derek,

Science is atheistic in nature because there is no provision in the scientific method to include principles of religion or the recognition of God as a force in the universe. It is not that scientists are necessarily atheistic, nor is it so that we who perceive cannot see and recognize the hand of God in all things. The material universe around is a marvelous confirmation of the existence of God, but scientific method can only deal with observations that are measurable, communicable and repeatable. With such limitations the scientific method always leads to erroneous conclusions when it deals with those matters that result from God’s creative or directive activities.

I’ve just been called into young men’s having taught the adult gospel doctrine Sunday School lesson for the last two years. I used the lesson suggestions from Mormon Town to assist in making my lessons more enjoyable with quotes, etc. Is there anyone providing the same service for young men’s. How do you get through to a bunch of teenagers that really don’t want to be there.  Keep up this excellent work, it really is an inspiration.

Thanks

I have had the wonderful privilege to use some of your material in my priesthood lessons.  something has happened to Mormon Town and I am not able to access your material from that site.

Is there another area that can be accessed to allow me to continue using your beautiful lessons as a resource for my lessons in my home branch of Mount Juliet, Tennessee? You have added much insight into my own study and have often directed me to a line of thinking that I may have overlooked.  It has been a very rich and rewarding opportunity both for me and for the priesthood of my Branch to be able to uses some of your material.

I also share your quality background, I am the manager of safety and quality for Aladdin Temp‑Rite, a food system manufacturing firm in Nashville, Tennessee.  My responsibilities include all quality assurance for our manufactured materials, all source inspection for our purchase for resale items, incoming inspection for material from our suppliers, all compliance issues such as NSF, UL, and other regulatory areas.  In addition I also am responsible for safety and product safety.  I deal with local, state, and federal safety issues and OSHA requirements.

Once again thank you for your hard work and wonderful insight into priesthood issues.

The Ask Gramps Column—

That is positively the best explanation I’ve been given to date. I hope you don’t mind if I print this out and share it.

Thank you,

Susan Fritter Larmour

I’ve just recently joined mormontown as a member and just read my first responses to questions asked of Gramps. I enjoyed reading them and feel I gained great insight into the “whys” of many answers to commonly asked questions. What is Gramps background? Thank you very much for this site on the web. On your answer concerning headlights and light speed, may I say I’ve never read a more eloquent explanation. What I found most interesting was your comment on where the theory of relativity will end up. It is, after all, just a theory! Given that technology is approximately doubling every six months, we arrive at an exponential equation that boggles the mind of anyone born near the turn of the last century.

Goodbye To Ask Gramps Author, Clay Gorton

Clay Gorton has written the Ask Gramps column for over two years. With still roughly 70 questions still to be answered, Brother Gorton has informed us he will no longer be taking new questions.

Citing involvement in some new activities, Brother Gorton told us, “All good things must come to an end, there’s just not enough time to do everything.”

Ask Gramps began as a regular Question and Answer column for kids, but the overwhelming response by readers of the column wanting more information regarding gospel, moral, and family questions quickly became almost a full‑time job for the former mission president.

“There are many of the questions I have received lately that are really already answered in other places in the archives of Mormontown,”  Brother Gorton said, adding, “For anyone who has a question the first and most important place a person should go is to the Lord and then to their Bishop.”

Ask Gramps will continue for the through the end of the year by adding the backlog of over 100 questions and answers.  All of the Ask Gramps Questions are available in the columns section and from this link:

Thanks for your answer. You brought up some points that I had not taken the time to consider.

Thalia

I want to let you know how much I enjoy “Mormon Town ‑ the “Ask Gramps” feature is probably my favorite and the Women’s Magazine is just wonderful ‑ very helpful and uplifting. I have told many of my friends about your site. Thank you so much.

Aliece Gibson

Do you know others like yourself on the internet who answer questions?  Also how did you get so smart? I would be happy if you adopted me as your grandson. What are we having for Thanksgiving dinner? I will rake leaves after dinner.

Love

Bro. Kenneth Hightower

Gramps,

When do you plan on publishing a book of all the questions you have received and your replies?

It would be a great reference book similar to the “Answers to Gospel Questions” series of Joseph Fielding Smith. Thanks

Spudgam

Gramps,

How many weeks do you let your questions run, and do you just scatter new ones throughout the old?  I look forward to your column and read it religiously, but find that I have read most though a few new ones appear?  Could they be added just at the bottom and elimination occur at the top so that we who are faithful followers could run down to the new ones, but the old valuable ones would still be there fore new readers? .....Thanks for the speedy reply.  I love your explanations of things. They are very simple and straightforward, yet never stuffy.  Keep up the good work.

Dear Gramps,

Thank you for a wonderful, informative, question and answer column.

Lynne

Gramps,

I think you do a wonderful job. Your answers are thorough, understandable, referenced by standard works, and general authorities, and, therefore, doctrinally sound. I appreciate the fact that many of them are loving and kind to the writer, if there is such a thing in e-mail..

Sincerely,

Mark Stanley

Gramps,

This is not a question or a comment to put on line, but just a personal note of thank you for sharing your knowledge, your spirit, and your love of the Lord and the Gospel. Your influence reaches astronomical numbers of people, and I for one consider myself privileged to have access to your insights and your wisdom. I have grown to truly see you as a wise Grandfather who I would go to in a second with a question of the Gospel, believing that you could answer any concern I might have. I cannot fathom the years and years of study and devoted service that you have given that has brought you to this point. How do you know so much? What format do you use to answer all these questions? Thank you again and again for all you do for us “littlings” out there in LDS land who benefit and grow and gain understanding because of your sacrifice and wisdom and service.

Sandy M.

in Kalamazoo, Mi.  :)

Thanks for your time and consideration and the time you have taken to answer others. I have learned a lot from the answers.

Pete

Dear Bro. Gorton,

My name is Ron Patrick, the CES Coordinator in Vancouver, B.C. and I came across Mormon Town and have been reading some of the material. I wish to compliment you for your Ask Gramps column. Thank you for taking the time to answer questions with great insight, experience and solid references. God bless you.

Ron Patrick

Dear Gramps,

I just found this site several days ago and now visit daily! Thank you for a wonderful, informative forum

Dianne

I appreciate your answers to questions so much. To have so many questions answered for people I think is a valuable tool in allowing those of us who have questions to give us a nonjudgmental forum to do so, without feeling we are “weak”!

Pam

Thank you. I do love your answers. Please keep up the good work and know that I (and others)  am praying for you to stay on the straight and narrow so your answers reflect that which Heavenly Father would have you say...

Pam

Clay

I appreciate your reply very much, and although Ben did not even bother reading the articles you suggested, I found them to be fascinating, especially “The Transitory Nature of Telestial Knowledge.” I used this article to quiz another friend, Shane, who has a Degree and Honors Degree in Science, it was an interesting discussion to say the least.

John Campbell

Thank you for all that you do for Mormon Town. Thank you so much for doing this column!!

Jason Purdie

Dear Clay,

Thank you for the forward to your book. Your column is an important part of Mormon Town and we do get fine comments about it. Even my sister thinks it is the best part of Mormon Town!

Barton

My wife and I greatly enjoy your comments, you are an inspiration to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We wish you the best during the Christmas season.

Love, Bill and Tina Lesh

Gramps...

I’ve been reading your stuff. I think you get paid by the word. But your words are nicely strung together. I have just printed out some copies of your “Where did Santa come from?” to share with granddaughter and other disinterested people, all of whom will profit from my smacking their heads against the wall until they take time out from Nintendo to read your explanation.

It is well done, Clay. Thank you.

Verne

Thank you for your answers! It is great to have a resource like this to get answers to things that I have been searching for for years.

JanaLee

Dear Clay,

Thank you so kindly for the timely response to my question about the Sabbath. For two years now this 44 yr old mother of three has been living and loving the Gospel. As we come off  the two week Christmas break my 15 yr old daughter just proclaimed, “Oh good, I can’t wait for seminary tomorrow!” Life is sweet and joyful, my heart is full.

Thank you again.

Jeanne

I’ve not read more than two dozen of your answers, but I’m amazed at the research and creative (in the right sense) way you answer the questions.

Ken, from Arizona

Gramps,

I just wanted to tell you thanks for getting back with me. I can tell you put a great deal of effort, care and thought into everyone's questions. Your questions and answers are the best thing on the internet. Thank you...

Angela

Gramps,

Thank you for answering my question. I just started reading your answers to the hundreds of questions you have received. I am very impressed with your answers. You are  very  intelligent. Thank you again for your service and time for many people you hear from. I have been meaning to write for sometime. I am  glad I did. I hope you will consider answering more of my questions in the future. What a great idea someone had in you becoming gramps. They obviously picked the right man.

Sincerely ,

Roger Payne, Brea, CA

Thank you for your advice.  I appreciate your forthright response.  You’re advice does feel right.

Sincerely and with thanks.

Sheldon

Love to hear from you. I just read all your letters.... 1‑11. You must be a man with a lot of patience. What a wonderful service you are providing.

Roger, Brea Calif.

I love this Gramps program, it is so revealing. Is there any chance that you could make it possible to format these articles for printing, rather than have all the extra articles at the side? Thanks John.

Clay—

Thanks so much.  I look forward to further discussions with you.  This research is really important to us and somewhat time sensitive. On a personal note, I’ve been a member of Mormontown for many months now and have enjoyed so much yours and others efforts—keep it up!!!

Sincerely,

Bob Freeman

Dear Gramps

Thank you. I am strong in my beliefs and have never trusted man. I worry though about my children. They live more in the world than I have. I try to teach them the ways of God, but they are often influenced by things of man. Your answer helps me to know how to explain to them better.

Thank you for being here.

Rebecca

Thank you so much for the explanation.  I love the scriptures and feel that it is important to understand them correctly.  I appreciate the resources that you provide for so many of us.

Gramps. Thank you for your reply. I just have one word to say to you. “WOW!!!” You are doing a wonderful service, please keep up the good work it is very enlightening. I love the Gospel and you make it come alive. I guess I had more than one word to say after all. But then people tell me I always do.

Dear Brother Gorton,

Thank you for your reply to my question about getting the endowment. I really appreciate it. I am planning to talk to my Bishop this Sunday. We have a really wonderful Bishop. I also want to thank you for “Ask Gramps,” I really loved reading all of the questions and answers. It is very nice of you and caring of you to do that. Thank you,

M. L.

Dear Gramps...

Thanks so much for your advice...  You have helped me more than you know..

Thanks for you wisdom... This is an inspired column!!!....

Love, Dixie

No questions today.  Just a sincere Thank You for the time and effort you put into your answers!  Be you one gramps or many :o) my heart is uplifted by the responses you give. With love and appreciation: My Heart to Yours,

B‑L B

What a delightful site. A friend e-mailed me your location. Bro. Gorton, if I may be so bold, your insight reminds me of Solomon. I happened to be praying for someone in the church to ask a question, without it having to be formal - like my bishop; or to ask a friend or someone in my family.  I decided to set the question aside and went to check my e-mail.  In it was a site a friend said I might enjoy.  MormonTown and Ask Gramps.

S. Hill

Thanks Bro. Gorton.  You open my eyes a little wider.  Seems I have been blessed and didn't recognize it.  Thanks so very much for your reply and I will definitely Thank My Father in Heaven for ALL the blessings that he gives to me.

Harry Moon

Dear Brother Gorton,

I knew that if anyone could help me get to the answer I needed about old major and prattlers it would be you!!  I appreciate the prompt response and your thorough manner of answering the question.  Thanks again for your help. In gospel bonds,

Jeffrey Faust

Dear Gramps,

Thanks so much for your site.. You have never failed to answer any of the guest’s questions with an answer that did not have the sweet confirmation of the spirit. Thank you.. I have learned more and have had more personal study revelations confirmed by you than any other source..

Rick

Gramps,

Thank you very much  for your reply. I was surprised to hear from a “real” person, especially so quickly, and from someone so well informed.

Mike

Dear Brother Gorton,

Thank you (“Eskerrik asko” is thank you in Basque) so very much for your kind, thoughtful, inspiring and prompt answer.  The Lord works through people and I can tell you that you are certainly doing part of the Lord’s work. Keep up the good work!! Yours in gratitude,

Mikel Morris (Doing Basque translations for the Church)

Dear  Gramps

I am an avid reader of your column, I have learned a lot and pondered more.

Kami Montano

Dear Gramps,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank YOU!

JJ, from Canada

Clay,

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I have asked many, many people these same questions and not one could give me an answer that made any sense (including missionaries). So until I read your answer I disagreed with them. Thanks

Ashley, from Nevada

Thank you for your reply. Your comments have confirmed the responses which I have already made to my friend. And I may pick up one of your books to help him with his search for evidence.  Hopefully he is sincere in his search for the truth and not just trying to be argumentative. But I’m not too sure on his sincerity as of yet. For I did ask him why he separated “Mormonism” from “Christianity” and explained our deep belief and understanding of the Savior and he just seemed to ignore it. Oh well, I will keep trying and maybe some of the evidences in your book may help him.

Darren, from Colorado

Gramps—

More of a comment than anything else. I attended a ceremony in the Bountiful temple the other day and “Grampa” officiated. What a beautiful ceremony it was. The counsel that was extended to the young couple was priceless. Grampa, the world will be blessed as long as there are those of you who have studied and prepared to keep the Gospel alive in the hearts and minds of the rest of us who are coming along behind you. I wish I could have had my own children there to hear what you passed on to us. I’m trying hard to recall all that you said. Thanks so much for your commitment to righteous living. And for taking the time to share your wisdom for so many years.

Bill Carruth, from Utah

Dear Gramps;

I don’t have a question, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your column, and the answers you give have helped me to understand many aspects of the gospel that I didn’t know before

Thank You,

Mary‑Lou Bush

Gramps,

I was wondering if your column is the result of an official calling of the Lord, or is it on a volunteer basis? Or, did you have to apply for the position? Just curious.

Mike Smith, from Utah

Gramps,

Don’t you just get furious when you have members asking stupid questions that they KNOW the answer to but want to be vindicated; or mormon people demanding constant proof to so much trivia? My question is how do you stay so patient with them. I see them as very spoilt children who want everything their own way. You are an incredibly good man and I hope and pray that the Lord will make your home coming as gentle and loving as He can. You have earnt a golden crown for your love for your fellow man.

God bless and keep you always.

Paula, from Australia

But, Why?

Ni är ju helt jävla dumma i huvet!

(You are totally dumb in the head!)

Johan (Apparently from Sweden)

Estamado Johan,

Gracias por tu comunicacion. Respetamos las opiniones de todos. No jactamos de ningunos credenciales personales. Solo tratamos de reflejar las escrituras y las publicaciones de las Autoridades Generales.

Abuelito.

(Dear Johan,

Thank you for your communication. We respect everyone’s opinion. We boast of no personal credentials, we only try to reflect the scriptures and the publications of the General Authorities.

Gramps)

Why Gramps, I could just kiss you on the forehead.....

I belonged (un-subscribed) to a email ring that was for LDS people working on being meatless eaters.... People there were saying how they had prayed and how the Lord had told them that the people who were still eating meat were still not as enlightened as the vegans and vegetarians........ there were people who were mixing flax seeds with water making a shake because it was "healthy"........Thanks

Myra

Dear Gramps,

I’d like to know who you really are. I know your name is Clay but I would like more about you so I can feel that your advice is truly what my sage LDS grandfather would’ve  told  me; if  he ever had existed). I hope you understand my need to know.

Myra

Gramps,

Thank you so much. You don’t know how much I needed these words.

Lee

Of course, thank you very much. I enjoy your responses to questions posed in your Mormon Town column. Thanks for providing this opportunity.

Joanne, from Idaho

Dear Gramps,

I always seem to learn something new. I have a very simple question for you. Lately I haven’t seen anything new in your column, how do you decide which letters to answer and where to do it? THANKS for the great reading!

KAMI

Thanks so much for your speedy and helpful answer.  I appreciate you!

Leslie Robison

Dear Gramps:

You recently answered a question I had. You answer helped!  Thank you.

Dear Gramps,

How often do you answer and post new question? Thanks for all the good information that you provide and the questions that you clear up.

LJ

Clay

May I first say that I think that this service you provide is fantastic.  I think that I am going to have to be careful not to ask you too many questions.

Andy Dyson

 Dear Gramps,

In one of the early issues of your article I wrote to you about my young son’s unwillingness to bear his testimony. Your advise was wonderfully inspired. I helped him think about and recognize his testimony and quit pressuring him. Recently he had a special spiritual experience and he bore a beautiful simple testimony on his own. I’d  rather you didn’t print this. I just wanted you to know that someone is listening and you are doing good. Sincerely,

Lorrie

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!  As a new believer and convert to the church after 25 years as a born again evangelical, sometimes I hear things and do not know what to make of it all....though my testimony is sure and solid!!!!  I really enjoy your column on Mormon Town ‑ it has helped me a LOT!!! God Bless & Happy Easter! He Lives,

Karen

Just wanted to say THANKS! I’m a “stranger in a strange land” (culture and language), newly married, new stepmother of five, just released from a calling of RS Pres, left my job of the last ten years...my world is upside down some days ‑ however, your column grounds me. It reminds me that life goes on, that there are people grounded in the reality I know and believe in. I love your answers! You base your answers on the “read the instructions” idea...in other words, read the scriptures. Keep up the good work!!!

Theresa W. Frederiksen, from Denmark

I have just discovered your column and I am enjoying reading your answers to the questions asked. I have no questions at this time but wanted to say thanks for the responses to the questions asked by others. I always have enjoyed your great knowledge of the gospel. Thanks again for sharing. Sincerely,

Rosalind

THANK YOU for your personal reply. I had expected I might have to wait several weeks to find it in your “Ask Gramps” section! That was so very thoughtful of you! Cannot thank you enough!  I cannot tell you how you have helped me. I am actually in the process of helping someone else who is having trouble forgiving themselves. I’m sure that is what brought remembering everything on...and then was not taking my own advice. Thank you so very much. I so appreciate the time that you take to do this. I know that you must bless many, many lives. Have a wonderful day!

Dear Gramps,

I’ve read some of your other articles, and I am in awe of your knowledge and wisdom. I only hope that someday I can achieve the heights of learning that you have obviously worked so hard to reach. My prayer is for your continued good health and for that of your family. GOD bless and keep you!!!

HI Clay. I’m Penlady, the other columnist. I don’t read  too many things in this paper thoroughly, but I always gobble up your column. You do an awesome job, even for controversial and angry letters. Keep it up. Your new friend,

Gramps,

Thank you so much for your quick response.  I appreciate your column so much and am amazed at the wonderful answers you have for such a variety of  questions. It’s nice to know there is a source that you can ask (sometimes dumb) questions and still get a response.

Joan

Dear Brother Gorton (Gramps)

Thank you for the answer to my question on excommunication X 2.  I was pleasantly surprised to receive it so promptly, and to have it e‑mailed directly to me.

Margaret, from Canada

Clay,

We have been checking in on the Ask Gramps Page to see what's cook'n. Great questions and very good answers. You are an inspiration to my family and me. I can't help but see that some of the questioners are a bit antagonistic. It looks as though a small group might think they can stump you. You always handle these cases with the right resolve.

Nolan

Thank you so much for your answer.  As I read it I began to feel a peace settle over me that I haven’t felt in some time. Of course, it was the spirit witnessing the truth of your words. Thank you for your wisdom, and for your willingness to serve us through the Ask Gramps site. With Love,

Sherry

Gramps,

This isn't a question Gramps, but a thank you. I wrote not so long ago, about the troubles we were having in our ward, and how annoyed I felt towards the bishop. Well, like you said about repentance, I had been feeling bad thoughts towards that bishop. I spoke with him on Sunday, and I wanted you to know, that I know your reply was good, I was in need of repentance, no matter what the situation is, we should forgive each other, and not hold bad feelings. During this time, I noticed I had some very bad depressing days, I know that the spirit was not with me, as I didn’t deserve it. Well, I just hope that I have learnt from this, and can now progress once again. Thank you.  I love your column.  Jen

Dear Gramps,

I don’t have the nerve to ask another question right now (although I have a million)...but I just want to express my gratitude again for the complete, inspired, and honest answers you have given me thus far...  Anyway, I have taken up so much of  your time and been so blessed by your inspired and knowledgeable efforts to help us learn..

Francis Clark

Dear Brother Gorton

Thank you for the quick response.  I was about to panic. I learn so much from the Q’s and A’s in “Gramps” and many of the questions I have been curious about are answered.

Francis Clark

Dear Sir,

I was browsing through your explanation on root beer and its foamibility. Your reply was really excellent and I found it very interesting. Generally I keep reading on colloidal science and foams as I find this phenomenon very appreciating.  Sir, I would we very grateful to you if you can resolve one of my queries on foamibility. Can you guide me on whether there could any chemical which on addition to an aqueous surfactant solution can enhance the foam even further. If yes, which one is it and is it due to it being more surface active than the surfactant. Thanking you, Yours sincerely,

Manish.

I do not have a question but a Big Thank You and also to tell you I will miss you when you are gone. I asked a question a short while ago that dealt with someone that I was having difficulty getting along with.  Your answer was truly guided by our heavenly Father. Not only is that person and I getting along but I am able to view life through much different eyes now. I am so thankful that our Father in Heaven blesses us in so many ways. To be more like our eldest bro. Jesus Christ is a full time endeavor but worth more than we can ever imagine. Thanks for being such a loving Brother to all of us who have written to you.

Harry M. August 30, 2000

Dear Gramps,

I am so sorry to hear that you will no longer be a regular contributor to Mormon Town.  I am wondering how to access the archives of your past columns. Also, I would be delighted if you would write a book containing the entirety of questions asked, and your responses. I have found that my children (teens) are much more willing to read your responses than they are to listen to mine, even if my responses to their questions are identical to yours! I would be the first in line to purchase such a book. I consider you a Solomon of modern times! Thanks for all you have contributed to your audience!

Dawn Rider, August 30, 2000

Hello Clay,

You may remember me, I am the one who raised the all controversial question on hunting. I think that stirred up quite the emotions in my family. Some were very spiteful and were passed along to you.

I saw that you are "retiring" from this job and thought I had better write. No more questions. I just wanted to let you know that I wrote to you initially because my husband was a trophy hunter. Yes, I used the word was, because for the first time Joe has put a lot of thought into what he was doing. He also read the book ANIMALS AND THE GOSPEL by GERALD E. JONES and SCOTT S. SMITH. He found both the book and your comments to be very enlightening and has decided that he has made some mistakes by hunting "for the fun of it" or to have a head mounted on the wall. He had already drawn out on his deer permit for this year, and has that permit in his possession. However, I overheard him tell his extended family that he would not be participating in the hunt this year unless there was a family member in real need for the meat.

Thank you for your time. I have not seen your comments on this subject posted in Mormon Town, this could be a benefit to others as well.

Sherie

Dear gramps,

Thanks a lot for your advise on how to give better speeches. I took all your points and I explained them to the members and everybody seemed to understand and agree.

Clay --

Great reply to a young lady, I presume, who wants to establish a better pattern for herself. Your suggestions couldn’t be improved, at least from my point of view. Thanks for having love and concern for someone with a question, who is unknown to you. You truly are a GRAMPS to be trusted by young and old alike, I appreciate you, and value knowing you. Thanks Clay. Love from an admiring brother.

Gordon

Just a short note to let you know how much I enjoy receiving your e-mails. Especially enjoy “Ask Gramps” Thanks.

Jim Cook, from Lodi, CA

Gramps,

Thank you for such a refreshing piece (speaking of modern day miracles). I think that in this busy world that we live in, we sometimes forget that simple, common things in our everyday lives truly are miracles. Like the examples you pointed out of missionaries learning a language in just two months. The way you wrote that piece was just refreshing and made me think that we do have many miracles and to always remember the small things. Thank you again.

Dearest Gramps:

I just read the question “Ruth” sent to you regarding the Priesthood and her responsibilities since her husband is seriously ill. I thought your reply to her was wonderful. It touched my heart and I would like to say something to Ruth and would greatly appreciate it if you would forward it to her.

Thank you. It is still quite hard, as life is, but I will get through it. Thank you for your time and patience. Your advice is great, and one that I have not thought of for awhile. I do have a problem forgiving myself. But now that I am aware that it is a problem, I can now work on the solution. Thanks again. This is a wonderful program you have.

We greatly enjoy your insightful and inspirational answers to questions; they are being saved in a special file and trotted out when the need arises -- such as when I have to give an inspirational thought in Bishopric meeting or Welfare Council (and, yes, I make sure you get the credit!).

Dear Gramps:

I have been reading your wonderful comments in this "Dear Gramps" series for quite awhile now, and I love the way you can take what seems like a difficult subject to the writer and make the solution sound so simple -- as if a lightbulb were being turned on!

This is a very wise counsel, I appreciate your time and knowledge. You are absolutely right, I will talk to my children about it. I will never get off the ways of the Lord. I will counsel in action and word and I will let them use their free agency. I appreciate also your quick answer. Thanks again.

This is a thank you. I just came home disappointed in the two 'wasted' hours spent in a ward council meeting. I accepted a calling having no experience in the area (YW President - I joined the church when I was 17) never having served in that auxiliary. The biggest handicap was the language barrier - and still is. (I'm an American living in Denmark). Tonight I wanted to quit. There has been so much opposition in my life recently (although in my calling it is just the language) and I wanted to give up. Reading your response to whether we should accept a calling or not - the Bishop knew me well, knew I did not speak the language, knew I was having trouble learning it, knew my many weaknesses and my strengths AND HE WAS INSPIRED OF THE LORD. If the Lord believes I can do it, who I am to doubt? Your response reminded me of that. Thank you again.

I don't have a question, I just want to thank you for delivering such appropriate answers to questions asked. I hear so much of "Mormon tradition" rather than correct policy from so many members and it's so nice to hear correct policy and doctrinal interpretation (in my humble opinion). There have been many times when I've read a question only to think, "Oh no, I know that the pat Mormon response is--" and then you don't respond that way and I'm very impressed. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Lori Pierce, from Savannah, Georgia

I just wanted to tell you how wonderful your page is and what inspiration I receive from it. You have answered questions I didn't realize I had until I read the questions and answers. Your page is such a wonderful idea. Keep up the good work and may God bless you. Respectfully,

Thanks for your wonderful insight. I have been asked to speak in a youth conference workshop at Utah State University this summer regarding the prophet's statement, "Be Clean.” They specifically asked that I give the youth some guidelines for pornography. For this reason, I thank you for your response and suggestion.

Gramps.....

I really appreciated your comments to "K" about the repentance process. I especially liked the comment about not remembering or being harrowed up by the pain of the sins. Keep up the good work. There are many of us "struggling" bishops that appreciate your wisdom and insight. Thanks again.....

Dear Gramps,

Thank you once again for taking the time to answer my e-mail. It seems that you have answered my concerns as to whether I was making the appropriate choices. You have been an answer to my prayers. You have helped me a great deal to know that not all is lost, that with time and patience, all will be well.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I always copy your answers as "Gramps" to the questions sent in to you at the LDS Living Magazine. I love your answers. I learn so much from them. Just the other day a sister missionary asked me a question about the millennium while we were in the temple and I told her that I didn't have a complete answer for her, but that I would get the answer and then I read your answer to D. from Levenworth, KS on Mon. May 14th. It was what she asked, so now she and I both have a better understanding of that time. I also really like what you had to say to George, from Upper Darby, PA about his feeling of wanting to leave this world that "keeps lying to you". Thanks for continuing to teach and inspire me. We pray that all is well with the two of you. Take care. Aloha,

Bert and Amanda

Gramps,

I don't really have a question. I just wanted to say thanks. You're so awesome! You've answered so many questions I've had. Well anyway thanks very much!

Joy, from Dickson, Tennessee

June 8, 2001

I'm thoroughly amazed at the inspired, well thought out answers you've given to each question. That only leaves me with one question for you. How do you do it? Where do you find the answers? Do you just put your thoughts and own personal knowledge into words, do you ponder and research until a wise answer is produced, or is 'Gramps' a group of knowledgeable people who work together on a solution to the many challenging questions? Thank you for the uplifting service you give. It is a unique way of bearing your testimony, and I quite enjoy it. Thanks,

Wow

June 8, 2001

Hey gramps;

I really dig how you answer these questions so efficiently. I think that this is a very useful, and well oriented site for members and non members alike to use for answers to certain questions about the gospel. Even though we know that they should turn to the Lord first I think that you are doing a great thing here.

Ryan, from Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Gramps,

I just wanted to write and thank you for sharing your insights on gospel questions I have long wondered about. I like your column because you answer those little weird, niggling questions at the back of my mind that never really got cleared up. Those are the questions that cause me to doubt, to misunderstand and to hold back because I don't know the truth about them. THANK YOU!!

Dear Gramps,

This isn't a question but a letter of appreciation. I've just read your reply to Daniel on homosexuality. I don't share his problem, however I was most impressed with your counsel. You're right, homosexuality is just another temptation to be avoided. Thank you for your counsel. I enjoy reading your answers. By the way, I bought your book and love it. Keep up the good work

Gramps,

This is not a question but a letter of gratitude. You had a young man ask you about same sex attraction and why he had to deal with such a difficult burden. I was very impressed by your response and I shed tears over your compassion and understanding. Being a member who struggles with this same burden I have encountered a lot of prejudice and outright hate. Not only from people who do not have this burden but by those who tell me to "come out" and accept who I am. To see the kind of understanding and Christ like response was balm to my wounded heart. Thank you.

Sam, from Provo, Utah

I feel very fortunate for having found your web site as I previously only knew of you through Mormontown.org. Can you tell me what happened to that web site? Dear Gramps,

I am in awe of how you use your intelligence. I’ve acquired several of your papers from your web site and will continue pouring over them until I’ve digested every word. Clarity is setting me free. It is as if I am one little neuron whose place in a vast network has been found. Now I can just light up and fire away. The intellectual beast will stop raging–I am so grateful.

I am a branch president in Dunkirk, IN. My first counselor asked me to check out your site and see if this was something we would like to make our YM/YW aware of. I checked it out and found it to be a wonderful resource. Now for my own question.

In reading your biography I almost became depressed with my own life as I contemplated all your accomplishments. You are an amazing man and have done so many good things for the church and your family and even for yourself. Six missions! I hope to do a second with my sweetheart, but how could I ever do more? My question is this - did you feel successful as you were actually going through all these experiences? It is obvious now that you are and have been a great success, but did you feel like you were as it was happening? Will I feel like my life has been as wonderful when I’m older, the children are grown, and the pressures of keeping everything together diminish? Do the pressures ever diminish? Is it all in the attitude? I mean, I’m a college graduate, a returned missionary, father of 5 wonderful kids, have a decent career, a branch president, and consider myself a half way likeable guy, but I just still struggle to see me as successful or really making progress or really making significant contributions to those around me. I’m not sure I’m explaining myself well, but maybe you get the drift. Thanks,

Mike Shrack

Dear Gramps,

What a blessing you and your wisdom have been to me. I will be forever grateful to you for responding to my cry. I will go on in the knowledge that I have been forgiven and can accomplish much good in my life. I will hold you as an example of being an emissary for the Lord. I want to do good... as you do. Thank you for being there for me ...Satan will not be successful this time. So...as far as I understand things you have just gained many blessings, which will be added to the many you have most assuredly acquired in the past. Thank you again!

I have been so busy doing the Ask Gramps columns and books that I haven’t had time to add to my journal. I have just added the rest of the above accolades to date.

The years ago Duane and Jean Crowther, our back-door neighbors, were called on a mission to Mexico. Duane was the founder and president of Horizon Publishers. Prior to his mission he sold the company to one of his employees, Richard Hopkins. Hopkins, a read con artist, absolutely trashed the company. He paid no royalties, defaulted on the employees salaries, charged to Horizons debts incurred by his company, Cornerstone Publishers, defaulted on his payments to Duane, did not replace stock, and let the equipment go to pot! After a year in Mexico Duane had to return, get a summary judgment against Hopkins and take the company back. He asked me to run the company for the next year so that he could finish his mission. It was something that I did not want to do, but felt it important for him to finish his mission, so I accepted the challenge. The main challenge was related to the restrictions he placed on my time. He averred that I could do the job in just a half day a week! After some bargaining we settled on eight hours a week.

So I spent two half days a week at Horizons for the next year. Duane and Jean returned in the first week of May, 2002, and I retired. However, during the year, we got all the equipment in working order, upgraded the computer system (which was very antiquated), fired some low-productive personnel and hired a few much more highly qualified people, and turned the business into a successful operation. In the month of April Horizons grossed $56,000.
