Dear
Gramps, In a PEC meeting recently one member stated that he drinks de-caffinated
coffee, and he says that according to David O. McCay this practice does not
violate the Word of Wisdom. Please provide your thoughts on this subject.
Thank you. Scott, from Arizona |
Dear
Scott,
It
would be interesting if your friend could find the quote that he attributes to
President McKay. The use of tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco has been accepted
by the vote of the Church to be against the Word of Wisdom. In that declaration
nothing was said about caffeine content. We are also enjoined in the scriptures
(1 Thessalonians 5:22) to avoid the very appearance of evil. How would anyone
know that he we drinking only decaf? What if he were to order his decaf in a
restaurant, and a member of the Ward came and saw what he was drinking. That
member would probably think, “These Ward officials (PEC) say one thing from
the pulpit, but when they get out of Church, look what the do!” Perhaps your
friend could have a T-shirt made with the inscription, “Don’t worry, this is
only decaf.”
