Dear
Gramps, Another Word of Wisdom question. I recently traveled to a stake
meeting with a Sister from my branch. She and her husband are both faithful,
long time members and hold callings in the church.
They also attend the temple. During our conversation, she told me
that her husband drinks a lot of coffee, but only decaf and that she enjoys
tea, and will occasionally drink tea so as not to offend a hostess. She also
uses herbal tea at home. Once again, I am quite confused by the word of
wisdom concept. Coffee is coffee, whether it is decaf or not, right? And tea
is tea, correct? Since joining the church six years ago, I have not taken so
much as a sip of coffee or tea (nor do I have any desire to). I just wonder
how others in the church view the use of de-caffeinated coffee or tea.

Dear
Sherry,
I
imagine that you will be able to find, if you look hard enough, members of the
Church who practice every interpretation of the Word of Wisdom that you can
think of, and who find one way or another to justify in their minds the
continuation of their own particular desires, habits and addictions. One of the
marvelous things about the Lord’s Church is that every member has the right of
inspiration and direction from the Lord to understand that which he has revealed
to us for our health, happiness and salvation. You seem to be in tune, and I
think that you should trust your own inspiration.
