Hey gramps, I got both ask gramps books and I like them. Around Halloween we see on TV a lot of stories about all these haunted hotels, haunted houses, dungeons in England. What are ghosts exactly? Are they all evil spirits fooling us or are they some devils, some actual spirits trapped here. And what about these people that can say that they can actually see them and then they tell us that the entity is a trapped spirit and died a painful death and can’t let go of the earthly plane because they can’t see the light. Are all these things just Satan? What about the children spirits that they say play around the old mansions? Why would God let a child’s spirit stay here and suffer? Could you set me straight on this? I am confused. The stories on TV looks so real. Sincerely Valene Dubbelman |
Dear Valene,
Of course the spirits of those that leave mortality are on this earth and are in our vicinity. Brigham Young said,
Where is the spirit world? It is incorporated within this celestial system. Can you see it with your natural eyes? No. Can you see spirits in this room? No. Suppose the Lord should touch your eyes that you might see, could you then see the spirits? Yes, as plainly as you now see bodies, as did the servant of Elijah. If the Lord would permit it, and it was his will that it should be done, you could see the spirits that have departed from this world, as plainly as you now see bodies with your natural eyes. 3:368. (Brigham Young, Discourses of Brigham Young,, 376)
However, the stuff you see on television results from the fantasies of people who nothing about the truths of the eternities, and they are pure fictions. Please give them no credence. Spirits, although the spirit world is co-mingled with our natural world, have no power over mortals. They may make themselves known to mortals when they are on God’s errand. To the degree that wicked spirits may in some way influence wicked men, I have no idea. Since nothing in that realm has been revealed to us, I would leave it all alone, trusting in the justice, the power and the mercy of our kind and loving Father in Heaven.
