Dear
Gramps, I have heard it said that the Savior brought the Melchizedek
priesthood with him from the pre-existence, that he wasn’t ordained here
on earth. Is there any reference or information on this topic at all that
you know of? FH, from California |
Dear
FH,
The
Melchizedek priesthood is the authority for men to act officially in the name of
God. Of course, it was not necessary that the Savior be ordained to his own
authority that was delegated to man. Neither, since he was the only perfect man,
was it necessary for him to baptized for the remission of sins. Nevertheless, he
said, “Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfill all
righteousness,” and he submitted himself to the ordinance of baptism.
Although
it is not specifically mentioned in the scriptures, the indications are that the
Savior was ordained to the priesthood from the following scriptures in Hebrews.
[Jesus
Christ] called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec
Hebrews 5:10
Whither
the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after
the order of Melchisedec
(Hebrews 6:20).
