Dear Gramps, Why does a tetanus shot hurt so much? Thanks! Kristi from Phx. AZ |
Dear Kristi,
Anterior cingulate (AC) has been a
consistent area of activation in the pain neuroimaging studies.
Electrophysiological studies in anesthetized rats and conditioned rabbits
revealed that a high proportion of AC neurons is activated with noxious
stimulation. So there you have it. A tetanus shot is without doubt a noxious
stimulation. When you get the shot the anterior cingulate neurons go to work.
That really hurts.
