Dear Gramps, How do you explain to a family member that is new in the church about porno, masturbation, oral sex, and all the things we have been cautioned about and told by the Lord is a sin? The person I know has talked with a doctor who has said that if it enhances sex it is ok. Where can I find a really good talk about it from the church to show them? I am very troubled by the fact that it is going on. Elaine

Dear Elaine,

If the family member in question is also a member of the Church I doubt that you could tell them very much that they don’t already know. Such immoral activities are not nearly as much a matter of ignorance as they are of a lecherous spirit. It seems to me that very best approach that you might take in a situation like this is to convince the family member to consult with his or her bishop. The bishop will be a sympathetic listener and is committed to the best welfare of the member. Also the bishop is in a unique position to receive guidance and inspiration from the Lord in counseling and blessing the members of his ward.

To go to a doctor for advise on moral issues is like going to a biologist for advice on a question of psychology. Any doctor who gives such advice as you have receive is looking at the person as a piece of protoplasm devoid of moral considerations, and is promoting the philosophy of the Adversary in trying to subject the things of the spirit to the whims of the flesh.
