Dear
dc,
In
the same quote from Brigham Young, he says, “When the earth was framed and
brought into existence and man was placed upon it, it was near the throne of our
Father in heaven” (Journal of Discourses, Vol.17, p. 144). Being near the
throne of God, it was bathed in light. The implication of the statement by
Brigham Young is not that the earth had been in darkness before it was brought
into the solar system, but that when that event occurred, the sun, rather than
the celestial throne of God, became the source of light for the earth.
When
you refer to the scriptural reference that the earth was made in seven days,
I’m sure you realize that those days were not the 24-hour periods that were
defined after the earth was set up in this solar system, but rather seven
periods of time of indeterminate length. The Hebrew word for the word, day, as
found in Genesis, is “yowm,” which can be defined as a day of 24 hours or as
an indeterminate period of time. Without a doubt the latter definition applies
to the use of the word in the creation account in Genesis.
