Gramps,
Were Adam and Eve created in the Garden of Eden or were they created
somewhere else and then placed in the garden? If they were created somewhere
else, where was it? Thank you. Linda, from Utah |
Dear Linda,
Adam
was not created in the Garden of Eden. As a matter of fact, he helped to plant
it. Brigham Young makes the following statement on the subject—
“Though
we have it in history that our father Adam was made of the dust of this earth,
and that he knew nothing about his God previous to being made here, yet it is
not so; and when we learn the truth we shall see and understand that he helped
to make this world, and was the chief manager in that operation. He was the
person who brought the animals and the seeds from other planets to this world,
and brought a wife with him and stayed here. You may read and believe what you
please as to what is found written in the Bible. Adam was made from the dust of
an earth, but not from the dust of this earth. He was made as you and I are
made, and no person was ever made upon any other principle” (Journal of
Discourses, Vol.3, p.319).
When
Adam and Eve came to the earth and were introduced by the Lord into the Garden
of Eden both they and the earth were of a terrestrial glory. Therefore, it is
logical to assume that they were born on a terrestrial world. When Adam fell and
was expelled from the Garden the earth became a telestial sphere. The biblical
account reads—
And
unto Adam [the Lord] said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy
wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt
not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it
all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee;
and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou
eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for
dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return
(Genesis 3:17-19).
